Master Cylinder: Disassembly

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Lexus ES 330. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Remove master cylinder. See MASTER CYLINDER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Place master cylinder in vise. Remove "O" ring. Push in piston and remove snap ring with snap ring pliers.
  2. Push in piston and remove piston stopper bolt and gasket. On vehicles with VSC, tape the tip of a screwdriver, push in piston and remove straight pin by turning over cylinder body. On all vehicles, remove No. 1 piston sub-assembly, pulling straight out. If pulled at an angle, there is a possibility cylinder bore could be damaged.
  3. Place a rag and 2 wooden blocks on work table and lightly tap edges until No. 2 piston sub-assembly drops out of master cylinder. Make sure the distance "A" from rag to top of blocks is at least 3.9 in. (100 mm). See Fig 1. Check cylinder bore for rust or scoring.
