Disassembly and Assembly: Disassembly
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Infiniti G35. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Remove engine assembly from vehicle, and separate transmission from engine. Refer to "ENGINE ASSEMBLY ".
- Remove engine mounting bracket. Refer to "ENGINE ASSEMBLY ".
- Remove RH exhaust manifold. Refer to "EXHAUST MANIFOLD AND THREE WAY CATALYST ".
- Install engine sub-attachment with engine stand shaft (special service tool) to right side of cylinder block.
- Use spacer to engine rear side.
- Lift engine, and mount it onto the engine stand (special service tool).
- A commercial engine stand can be used.
CAUTION: Use an engine stand that has a load capacity [approximately 220kg (441 lb) or more] large enough for supporting the engine weight.NOTE: This example is an engine stand for holding at transmission mounting side with flywheel (M/T models) or drive plate (A/T models) removed. - Drain engine oil.
- Drain engine coolant by removing water drain plugs from cylinder block both sides at "B" and "C" and cylinder block front side at "A" as shown in the figure.
- Remove the following components and associated parts:
- Intake manifold collector; refer to "INTAKE MANIFOLD COLLECTOR ".
- Fuel tube and fuel injector assembly; refer to "FUEL INJECTOR AND FUEL TUBE ".
- Intake manifold; refer to "INTAKE MANIFOLD ".
- Ignition coil; refer to "IGNITION COIL ".
- Rocker cover; refer to "ROCKER COVER ".
- Thermostat and thermostat housing; refer to THERMOSTAT AND THERMOSTAT HOUSING .
- Water outlet and water piping; refer to WATER OUTLET AND WATER PIPING .
- Idler pulley
- Oil pan (lower) and (upper) and oil strainer; refer to "OIL PAN AND OIL STRAINER ".
- Front timing chain case, timing chain and rear timing chain case; refer to "TIMING CHAIN ".
- Camshaft; refer to "CAMSHAFT ".
- Cylinder head; refer to "CYLINDER HEAD ".
- Remove knock sensor.CAUTION: Carefully handle the sensor avoiding shocks.
- Remove clutch cover and clutch disc (M/T models). Refer to CLUTCH DISC, CLUTCH COVER .
- Remove drive plate (A/T models) or flywheel (M/T models). Fix crankshaft with a ring gear stopper (special service tool), and remove mounting bolts.
- Loosen mounting bolts in diagonal order.
- Use TORX socket for flywheel mounting bolts (size: T55, commercial service tool).
CAUTION:- Do not disassemble flywheel (M/T models) or drive plate (A/T models).
- Never place flywheel (M/T models) or drive plate (A/T models) with signal plate facing down.
- When handling signal plate, take care not to damage or scratch it.
- Handle signal plate in a manner that prevents it from becoming magnetized.
- Remove pilot converter (A/T models) or pilot bushing (M/T models) using pilot bushing puller (special service tool) or suitable tool as necessary.
- Remove rear oil seal retainer.
- Remove by inserting a screwdriver between main bearing cap and rear oil seal retainer.
CAUTION: If rear oil seal retainer is removed, replace it with a new one.NOTE: Rear oil seal and retainer make up a single part and are removed as an assembly. - Remove baffle plate from main bearing beam (for models produced after July 2002).
- Remove the piston and connecting rod assembly.
- Position the crankshaft pin corresponding to the connecting rod to be removed onto the bottom dead center.
- Remove the connecting rod cap.
- Using a hammer handle or similar tool, push the piston and connecting rod assembly out to the cylinder head side.
- Before removing the piston and connecting rod assembly, check the connecting rod side clearance. Refer to "CONNECTING ROD SIDE CLEARANCE ".
- Remove the connecting rod bearings from connecting rod and connecting rod cap.

CAUTION:- When removing them, note the installation position. Keep them in the correct order.
- Remove the piston rings form the piston.
- Use a piston ring expander (commercial service tool).
CAUTION:- When removing the piston rings, be careful not to damage the piston.
- Be careful not to damage piston rings by expanding them excessively.
- Remove the piston from the connecting rod as follows.
- Using a snap ring pliers, remove the snap ring.
- Heat piston to 60 to 70°C (140 to 158°F) with drier or equivalent.
- Push out piston pin with stick of outer diameter approximately 20 mm (0.79 in).
- Remove main bearing cap bolt.NOTE: Use TORX socket (size E14).
- Before loosening main bearing cap bolts, measure crankshaft end play. Refer to "CRANKSHAFT END PLAY ".
- Loosen them in the numerical order shown in the figure in several different steps.
- Remove main bearing beam.
- Remove main bearing cap.
- Using main bearing cap bolts, remove main bearing cap while shaking it back-and-forth.
- Remove crankshaft.
- Remove main bearings and thrust bearings from cylinder block and main bearing cap.CAUTION: Identify installation positions, and store them without mixing them up.
- Remove oil jet.
