Cooling System Bleeding

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Infiniti G35 and 2003 Infiniti G35. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING: To avoid the danger of being scalded, never change the coolant when the engine is hot. Wrap a thick cloth around the cap to carefully remove the cap. First, turn the cap a quarter of a turn to release any built-up pressure, then push down and turn the cap all the way to remove it.
CAUTION: Be careful not to allow engine coolant to contact drive belts. See Fig 1 .
NOTE: Check drained engine coolant for contaminants such as rust, corrosion or discoloration. If contaminated, flush the engine cooling system.
  1. Remove front engine undercover. Open radiator drain plug at the bottom of radiator, and remove radiator cap. When drain all of engine coolant in the system, open drain plugs on engine cylinder block located right side rear and left side front of cylinder block.
  2. Remove reservoir tank, drain engine coolant and clean reservoir tank before installing.
  3. Close the radiator drain plug and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Install the reservoir tank and cylinder block drain plug, if removed for a total system drain or for engine removal or repair.
  4. Remove air relief plug on heater hose. See Fig 1 .
  5. Fill radiator and reservoir tank to specified level. Use Genuine Nissan Long Life Antifreeze/Coolant or equivalent mixed with water (distilled or demineralized). When engine coolant overflows air relief hole on heater hose, install air relief plug with new O-ring and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  6. CAUTION: Watch engine coolant temperature gauge so as not to overheat engine.
  7. Warm up engine to normal operating temperature with radiator cap installed. Run engine at 3,000 RPM for 10 seconds and return to idle speed. Repeat two or three times.
  8. Stop engine and cool down to less than approximately 122°F (50°C). Cool down using a fan to reduce the time.
  9. If necessary, refill radiator up to filler neck with engine coolant. Refill reservoir tank to "MAX" level line with engine coolant.
  10. Repeat steps  5 - 7 two or more times with radiator cap installed until engine coolant level no longer drops. Check cooling system for leaks with engine running.
  11. NOTE: Sound may be noticeable at heater unit.
  12. Warm up engine, and check for sound of engine coolant flow while running engine from idle up to 3000 RPM with heater temperature controller set at several position between "COOL" and "WARM". Repeat noise detection procedure three times.
  13. If sound is heard, bleed air from cooling system by repeating steps  5 - 7 until engine coolant level no longer drops.
