DTC P1140: Intake Valve Timing Control Position Sensor: Procedure

  1. Turn ignition off. Disconnect IVTC position sensor harness connector. See Fig 1. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and IVTC position sensor harness connector terminal No. 3 (White wire). If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open or short circuit and retest system. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECM harness connector. See Figure. Check continuity of Red wire between IVTC position sensor harness connector terminal No. 2 and ECM harness connector terminal No. 65. See Figure. Also check circuit for short to ground and short to voltage. Repair circuit as necessary and retest system. If circuit is okay, go to next step.
  3. Loosen and retighten engine ground bolts located on intake manifold. See Figure. Check continuity between ground and IVTC position sensor harness connector terminal No. 1 (Black wire). Continuity should exist. Also check circuit for short to voltage. Repair circuit as necessary and retest system. If ground circuit is okay, go to next step.
  4. Check for accumulation of debris on signal pick-up portion of camshaft. Check intake valve timing control position sensor for damage. Measure resistance between terminals No. 2 and 3 at intake valve timing control position sensor (component side). Resistance should be 600-740 ohms at 68°F (20°C). If problem exists, repair or replace components as necessary, then retest system. If problem does not exist, go to next step.
  5. No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
