Tachometer Circuit

  1. Check Power Supply Circuit

Turn ignition off. Remove instrument cluster and leave harnesses connected. Turn ignition on. Using DVOM, measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 22 (Yellow wire) at appropriate instrument cluster harness connector. See Figure . If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, check condition of fuse No. 12 (10-amp), located in fuse block. Check for open or short in wiring harness between fuse and instrument cluster. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Repair as necessary.
  2. Check Tachometer Ground Circuit

Turn ignition off. Disconnect instrument cluster harness connectors. Using DVOM, check for continuity between ground and terminal No. 28 (Black wire) at appropriate instrument cluster harness connector. See Figure . If continuity is present, go to next step. If continuity is not present, repair open in ground circuit (Black wire).
  3. Check ECM Output

Reconnect instrument cluster harness connectors. Start engine. Using DVOM, measure voltage between terminals No. 28 (Black wire) and No. 29 (Blue/Orange wire) at appropriate instrument cluster harness connector. See Figure . While observing DVOM, increase engine speed to 2000 RPM, then reduce back to idle. Voltage should increase with higher engine RPM. If voltage is as specified, replace tachometer. If voltage is not as specified, check for an open or short in wiring harness between ECM and instrument cluster. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Repair as necessary.
