Speedometer/VSS Circuit Test

  1. Check Speedometer Ground Circuit  - Remove instrument cluster and disconnect wiring harness connectors. Check continuity between instrument cluster harness connector terminal No. 30 (terminal No. 28, if equipped with tachometer) and ground. See Figure or Figure . If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, repair open ground circuit (Black wire).
  2. Check Power Source  - Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and instrument cluster harness connector terminal No. 34 (terminal No. 22, if equipped with tachometer). See Figure or Figure . If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, check fusible links, ignition relay, ignition switch and ignition power circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Also see POWER DISTRIBUTION in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS  section.
  3. Check VSS Output  - Remove VSS from transmission and leave harness connected. Check voltage between instrument cluster harness connector terminals No. 22 and 23 (terminals No. 24 and 30, if equipped with tachometer) while quickly turning VSS pinion gear by hand. If no voltage exists, go to next step. If approximately 0.5 volt exists, replace speedometer.
  4. Check VSS  - Disconnect VSS harness connector. Measure resistance between VSS terminals. If resistance is not approximately 250 ohms, replace VSS. If resistance is approximately 250 ohms, repair harness or connections between VSS and instrument panel. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
