Air Injection System

  1. Disconnect air injection hose at air injection pipe side. Apply suction or air pressure to make sure that no airflow exits. Attach a vacuum pump to air injection control valve and apply vacuum.
  2. Apply suction or air pressure to air injection hose and check that air flows only on the air injection pipe side while control valve is operated. Check air injection valve and air injection control valve for binding or damage. Replace defective parts as necessary.
  3. On California models, remove thermal vacuum valve from engine. Apply a vacuum to port of air cleaner side, and check that thermal vacuum valve opens or closes in response to temperature.
NOTE: Before removing thermal vacuum valve, drain about one quart (one liter) of engine coolant.
  4. Immerse sensor in water. When water temperature is between 59 and 140°F (15-60°C), valve should be open. When water temperature is below 59 and above 140°F (15-60°C), valve should be closed.
