Air Injection Valve Control Test

  1. On Maxima and 300ZX models, check system operation. Disconnect cylinder head temperature sensor harness connector and connect a resistor (2500-ohm) across the terminals of cylinder head temperature sensor harness connector.
  2. Start engine and check whether the AIV valve operates by listening to the operating sound. If okay, disassemble AIV case and check AIV control valve and reed valves for binding or damage. Check cylinder head temperature sensor. If okay, test is complete. Replace malfunctioning part.
  3. Check AIV control solenoid valve for continuity. Resistance should be 30 ohms across terminals of valve connector. Check AIV control solenoid valve for operation. If not okay, replace the solenoid valve.
  4. Check for battery voltage between harness connector and ground when the ignition switch is turned to the "ON" position. Battery voltage should be present. If not, check battery voltage and ground for ECU, and harness between EFI relay and the solenoid valve.
  5. Check harness for continuity. Jump with a wire lead harness connector to ground. Measure resistance between ECU terminal No. 14 and ground. Resistance should be zero ohms. If not, repair or replace harness. If okay, replace ECU.
  6. If voltage readings were not okay, check harness continuity between AIV solenoid valve and ECU. Stop engine. Disconnect AIV solenoid valve harness connector. Disconnect 20-pin connector from ECU. Check resistance between terminal B of valve harness connector, and ECU terminal No. 20. Resistance should be zero ohms.
