System Spark Test

  1. If engine cranks but does not start, go to next step. If engine runs erratically, check ignition timing and adjust if necessary. If timing is okay, go to next step.
  2. Disconnect any spark plug wire and insert a used spark plug whose threads have been cut off. See Fig 1. Hold spark plug about 1/4" away from engine block. Crank engine and check for sparks at gap.
  3. If regular sparks occur, the IC ignition system is okay. Check spark plugs and/or fuel system. If no sparks occur, check air gap. See ADJUSTMENTS . If okay, perform the tests that follow in sequence.
