Failure Management
When main sensor malfunctions are detected, PCM will enter fail-safe mode. Default values will be substituted in PCM calculations for faulty sensor. See FAIL-SAFE MODE MALFUNCTION SUBSTITUTIONS table. Also when a problem is detected in vacuum control solenoid valve, ventilation control solenoid valve, crank angle sensor or any other systems listed in FAIL-SAFE MODE MALFUNCTION SUBSTITUTIONS table, traction control will not work.
FAIL-SAFE MODE MALFUNCTION SUBSTITUTIONS
| Malfunctioning Item | Control Substitutions During Malfunction |
|---|---|
| Volume Airflow Sensor | PCM Uses The Throttle Position Sensor Signal & Engine Speed Signal (Crankshaft Position Sensor Signal) For Basic Injector Drive Time & Basic Ignition Timing From The Pre-Set Mapping. It Fixes The IAC Motor In The Appointed Position So Idle Air Control Is Not Performed. |
| Intake Air Temperature Sensor | PCM Controls As If The Intake Air Temperature Is 25°C (77°F). |
| Throttle Position Sensor | PCM Does Not Increase In Fuel Injection Amount During Acceleration Due To The Unreliable Throttle Position Sensor Signal. |
| Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor | PCM Controls As If The Engine Coolant Temperature Is 80°C (176°F). |
| Camshaft Position Sensor | PCM Injects Fuel Simultaneously Into All Cylinders . (After The Ignition Switch Is Turned To On, The No. 1 Cylinder Top Dead Center Is Not Detected At All.) |
| Barometric Pressure Sensor | PCM Manages Engine As If The Barometric Pressure Is At Sea Level, 30 In. Hg (101 kPa). |
| Knock Sensor | PCM Switches From Ignition Timing For Premium Gasoline To Ignition Timing For Regular Gasoline. |
| Front Heated Oxygen Sensor | PCM Does Not Perform Air/Fuel Ratio Closed Loop Control. |
| Rear Heated Oxygen Sensor | PCM Performs The Closed Loop Control Of The Air/Fuel Ratio By Using Only The Signal Of The Front Heated Oxygen Sensor Installed On The Front Side Of The Catalytic Converter. |
| Communication Line With Transmission Control Central Processing Unit (CPU) | PCM Does Not Provide Ignition Timing Retard (Overall Engine & Transmission Control) Achieved When Transmission Speeds Are Changed. |
