Failure Management

When main sensor malfunctions are detected, ECM/PCM will enter fail-safe mode. Default values will be substituted in ECM/PCM calculations for faulty sensor. Sensors and default values are as follows:

  1. Volume Air Flow Sensor

Uses throttle position sensor signal and engine speed signal (crankshaft position sensor signal) for basic injector drive time and basic ignition timing from pre-set mapping. Fixes IAC motor in appointed position so idle air control is not performed.
  2. Intake Air Temperature Sensor

Controls as if intake air temperature is 77°F (25°C).
  3. Throttle Position Sensor

No increase in fuel injection amount during acceleration due to unreliable throttle position sensor signal.
  4. Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor

Controls as if engine coolant temperature is 176°F (80°C).
  5. Camshaft Position Sensor

Injects fuel into cylinders in order 1-3-4-2 with irregular timing. (After ignition switch is turned to ON, No. 1 cylinder top dead center is not detected at all.)
  6. Heated Oxygen Sensor (Front)

Air/fuel ratio closed loop control is not performed.
  7. Heated Oxygen Sensor (Rear)

Performs closed loop control of air/fuel ratio by using only signal of heated oxygen sensor (front) installed on front side of catalytic converter.
  8. Generator FR Terminal

No generator output suppression control is performed for electrical load (to be operated as an ordinary generator).
  9. Misfire Detection

ECM (M/T) or PCM (A/T) stops supplying fuel to cylinder with highest misfiring rate if a misfiring that could damage catalytic converter is detected.
