Steering Column: Disassembly

  1. Remove steering column from vehicle. See STEERING COLUMN  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. On A/T models, remove gearshift assembly. Disconnect shift indicator. Disconnect link assembly.
  2. Remove boot and cotter pin. Disconnect overdrive switch connector. Remove nut and guide bolt at bottom of gearshift lever. Remove gearshift lever guide bolt and gearshift assembly. Ensure gearshift assembly does not bind in detent plate. Remove steel ball, ball support and spring.
  3. On all models, remove tilt lever, tilt lever bolt, tilt lever screw and tilt bracket. See Fig 1 . To remove steering lock, cut a slot in retaining screws with hacksaw. Remove screws using screwdriver. Remove steering lock and bracket. Remove dash panel cover.

  4. To remove steering support, cut a groove in bolt head with a hacksaw. Use screwdriver to remove bolt. Remove column tube clamp, column inner bushing, and lower column. Remove snap ring(s). Remove steering shaft assembly.
  5. Remove yoke, horn ground spring, steering coupling, rubber coupling, and steering shaft. Remove dust cover and clamp. Remove lower joint boots and dust covers.
