Transaxle Reassembly

  1. Place assembled input and output shafts onto Transaxle Holder (MB995025). Install shift rails and shift forks onto shafts. Put shift lock into place and lower gear case onto transaxle holder.
  2. Install reverse brake shim and ensure it is aligned properly. Place input and output end bearings on shaft ends and press into case until flush. Install bearing retainer snap rings on input and output shafts. Apply Loctite Sealant (18718) to end cover outer edge and install end cover to case. Torque end cover bolts to 21 ft. lbs. (29 N.m).
  3. Remove gear case from transaxle holder and place on bench with end cover down. Turn selector shaft into slot on shift block assembly. Install spacer clip onto selector shaft and install shift levers.
  4. Install reverse idler gear shaft and securing bolt. Torque reverse idler gear shaft bolt to 19 ft. lbs. (26 N.m). Install reverse fork bracket and cam lockout assembly. Torque bracket bolts to 97 INCH lbs.(11 N.m). Install differential assembly into gear case.
  5. Before final assembly is completed, differential preload must be determined. Remove differential bearing race and shim from clutch housing case. Install new bearing race without installing shim. Lubricate differential assembly bearing with engine oil and install clutch housing case. Torque case bolts to 21 ft. lbs. (29 N.m).
  6. Turn transaxle case with clutch housing down. Install Adapter (MB995038) and dial indicator onto transaxle. See Fig 1 . Turn adapter with handle several rotations to seat bearings. Apply load upward and record end play measurement. End play should be .007" (.18 mm). Remove adapter and dial indicator and turn transaxle over.
  7. Remove clutch housing case and differential assembly bearing race. Use the following formula to determine shim selection:
    • "A" - .007" (.18 mm) = "B"
    • "A" = Recorded end play measurement.
    • "B" = Shim thickness required for proper preload.
    • .007" (.18 mm) = Standard end play value.
  8. Install shim, bearing race and clutch housing case. Torque transaxle case bolts to 21 ft. lbs. (29 N.m). Using Adapter (MB995038) and an INCH lb. torque wrench, turn differential assembly. Turning torque should be 6-12 INCH lbs. (.7-1.4 N.m). If turning torque is more than specified, reduce shim thickness by .020" (.5 mm). If turning torque is less than specified, increase shim thickness by .020" (.5 mm). Recheck turning torque is shim replacement is made.
