PCM REPROGRAMMING OR REPLACEMENT

Model(s): 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Group: 13 - Fuel

Bulletin No.: TSB-94-13-003 Rev

Date: April 1995

NOTE: This Technical Service Bulletin replaces TSB-94-13-003 Rev that was issued in February, 1995. Changes include reprgramming instructions for DTC 113 and corrected warranty labor operation numbers.

PURPOSE

Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) 111 or DTC 113, or DTC 126 or poor driveability may be due to Powertrain Control Module (PCM) software complications. After performing diagnostic procedures, PCM reprogramming or replacement can eliminate these conditions.

VEHICLES AFFECTED

Condition: DTC 111, DTC 126 or Poor Driveability

Vehicle: 1995 Eclipse Non-Turbo Only

Build Date: Before 9/11/94

VIN: Sequence Numbers Before VIN 4A3A**  4Y SE064919

( - The number or letter designation in these positions depends on the individual vehicle.)

Condition: DTC 113

Vehicle: 1995 Eclipse Non-Turbo Manual Transmission Only

Build Date: 9/11/94 to 2/15/95

VIN: Sequence Numbers VIN 4A3A**  4Y SE064918 to

4A3A**  4Y SE155130

( - The number or letter designation in these positions depends on the individual vehicle.)

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

DTC 111 AND DTC 126 (SCAN TOOL CODES P0411 AND P0138)

Affected vehicles may experience one or more of the following:

  • Check Engine/malfunction Indicator Lamp comes on for Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) #111
  • Check Engine/Malfunction Indicator Lamp comes on for Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) #126
  • Engine stalls during warm-up at cold ambient temperatures.
  • Long restart times after stall at cold ambient temperatures.
  • Rough idle after warm engine startup.
  • Engine RPM rises suddenly when air conditioning is turned on.
  • On manual transmission models, engine RPM drops suddenly after releasing the clutch.
  • On manual transmission models, engine surges under light acceleration.

On affected vehicles DTC 111 DTC 126 may be due to the PCM software program.

After normal diagnosis, the pulsed secondary air injection (aspirator) valve must be checked and replaced if necessary. Then the following PCM procedures must be performed:

  • On vehicles produced on or before 6/16/94, reprogram the PCM, using reprogramming cartridge MIT992006. This cartridge is included in Reprogramming Kit MIT992000-A, which was distributed to dealers earlier this year. Refer to the PROCEDURE section for details.
  • On vehicles produced from 6/17/94 to 9/10/94, install a new, recalibrated PCM. Refer to the PROCEDURE (FOR DTC 113) chart for details.

DTC 113 (SCAN TOOL CODES P0411)

On affected vehicles, DTC 113 may be due to the PCM software program. To eliminate DTC 113, reprogramming cartridge MIT992007 has been designed to modify the PCM program. This cartridge was shipped to dealers during the week of March 13, 1995.

If a new PCM (Part No. MO5269656 or M05269653) was installed on a vehicle produced between 6/16/94 and 9/10/94 to eliminate DTC 111, DTC 126 or poor driveability, you may need to reprogram the PCM in order to eliminate DTC 113.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

FOR DTC 111 and 126

  1. Perform the following diagnostic procedures:
    1. Follow the appropriate DTC diagnostic troubleshooting chart and/or Inspection Procedure for Trouble Symptoms chart.
    2. On manual transmission models remove the pulsed secondary air injection (aspirator) valve. See Fig 1 . Check the valve by blowing air through it from side A to side B. See Fig 2 . If you can blow air through the valve from side A to side B, replace the valve.
Fig 1: Location of Pulsed Secondary Air Injection Valve
      G94E57699
Fig 2: Checking Pulsed Secondary Air Injection Valve
      G94H57700
  2. If any malfunction is found during the troubleshooting procedures, repair as needed. Then perform a road test to determine if the problem is eliminated. Be sure to duplicate the symptom conditions (e.g. cold ambient temperatures, etc.) during the road test. If DTCs other than #111 and #126 are read with the scan tool, repair the problem using the appropriate DTC troubleshooting chart. Then perform a road test and retest to determine if the DTC is eliminated.
  3. If no malfunction is found and the problem is not eliminated:
    • On vehicles produced on or before 6/16/94, reprogram the PCM as described in the PCM REPROGRAMMING section of this bulletin, using Reprogramming Cartridge MIT992006 for DTC 111 and 126.
    • On vehicles produced from 6/17/94 to 9/10/94, install a new, recalibrated PCM. Do not attempt to reprogram the PCM on these vehicles. Replace the PCM with the appropriate part number (found in the next chart). After installation, affix an "Engine Compartment" label as described in Step 10 of the PCM REPROGRAMMING section of this bulletin. (Do not use the "Control Module" label.)

FOR DTC 113

  1. Follow the DTC 113 diagnostic troubleshooting chart. If any malfunction is found during the troubleshooting procedures, repair as needed. If DTCs other than DTC 113 are read with the scan tool, repair the problem using the appropriate DTC troubleshooting chart. Then perform a road test and retest to determine if the DTC is eliminated.
  2. Reprogram the PCM as described in the PCM REPROGRAMMING section of this TSB, using Reprogramming Cartridge MIT992007 for DTC 113.
  3. If DTC 113 is read with the scan tool and a new PCM (Part No. MO52169656 or MO5269653) was previously installed on a vehicle produced between 6/16/94 and 9/10/94 to eliminate DTC 111, DTC 126 or poor driveability, reprogram the PCM as described in the PCM REPROGRAMMING section, using Reprogramming Cartridge MIT992007 for DTC 113.

Refer to the chart below for appropriate repairs, PCM part numbers and reprogramming cartridges. Then check the current PCM part number on the vehicle and refer to Attachment 1 to confirrn the appropriate repair action.
