Steering Effort Check

  1. Place vehicle on flat surface, with steering wheel in straight-ahead position. Start engine. Ensure idle speed is 900-1100 RPM. Attach a spring scale to outer rim of steering wheel. See Fig 1 . Measure force required to turn steering wheel left and right in a range of 1.5 turns.
  2. Standard steering wheel turning force is 7.6 lbs. (34 N) or less, with a fluctuation allowance of 1.1 lbs. (5.9 N) or less. Ensure there is no significant fluctuation in turning force measurements. If measured force exceeds standard value, see SYMPTOM DIAGNOSTIC TESTS.
