Power Steering Pump: Inspection

  1. Check flow control valve, rotor and ring, end plates and pump shaft for damage, scoring or excessive wear. Inspect pump housing for cracks or visual signs of damage. Check "O" ring seats for scratches or burrs.
  2. Inspect pump shaft bushing in pump housing. If bushing is damaged, replace pump housing. Replace components as necessary. If any internal pump parts are damaged, flush steering gear or disassemble and clean gear.
NOTE: Pump ring is treated and a Gray/Black finish is normal. A wave-type grain appearance inside ring is normal.

  1. Position shaft in housing. Measure shaft-to-pump body clearance. See Figure . If clearance exceeds .008" (.2 mm), replace pump as an assembly.
  2. Inspect pump shaft oil seal lip and bushing end for damage. Inspect groove of rotor vane and cam surface for stepped wear. Check vane for damage.
  3. Check ring and rotor sides for grooving. Replace entire assembly if any damage is present. Check sliding surfaces of control valve for obstructions.
  4. Replace parts as required. If control valve is replaced, always use one with same identification mark as one being replaced. Check oil pressure.
