IGNITION TIMING INSPECTION PROCEDURE

Models: 1987 Starion

Bulletin No. STB-87-08-008

Date: September, 1987

PURPOSE

This bulletin is issued to update the ignition timing inspection for High Altitude and Cold Timing Advance Function procedure, Inspection of Detonation Control Function and Inspection of ESC Igniter.

INSPECTION OF CONTROL SYSTEM OPERATION

Inspection of Ignition Timing Control System at High Altitude and Cold Timing Control Function

Based on the information supplied by the atmospheric pressure sensor and engine coolant temperature sensor, the ECI control unit judges whether the vehicl e is at high altitude and/or the engine is cold, and in case such condition(s) exists, the ECI control unit controls the igniter for timing advance of approximately 5° in crank angle. Check this function by the following procedure.

Inspection at Altitude of Lower than 1.200 m (3.900 ft.)

  1. Check the ignition timing during the following conditions: (1) when battery voltage is applied directly to the ignition timing adjusting terminal and (2) when it is not (see Fig 1 ).
    IGNITION TIMING CHECK (Battery Voltage)

    BATTERY VOLTAGE IGNITION TIMING
When not applied Base (10° BTDC at idle)
When applied 5° advanced (15° BTDC at idle)

Inspection at Altitude of 1,200 m (3.900 ft.) or Higher

  2. Check the ignition timing during the following conditions; 1) when the ignition timing adjusting terminal is grounded and 2) when it is not.
IGNITION TIMING CHECK (Terminal Ground)

CONNECTOR IGNITION TIMING
When not grounded Base (15° BTDC at idle)
When grounded 5° retard (10° BTDC at idle)

Inspection procedure 4, "Inspection of Detonation Control Function", and Inspection Procedure 5, "Inspection of ESC Igniter" has been updated. These procedures are illustrated in Fig. Fig 2 .

Inspection of Detonation Control Systems

  1. After reading all self-diagnosis data of ECI system, turn the ignition switch "OFF".
  2. Disconnect the air flow sensor. Then, start the engine and let it idle (see Fig 2 ).

  3. Disconnect the detonation sensor. Make sure that when the detonation sensor is disconnected, the ignition timing retards by approximately 8° .
  4. With the ignition switch turned "OFF", connect the air flow sensor. Then disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery for more than 5 seconds and then reconnect it.
  5. Restart the engine and let it idle for more than 5 minutes with the air conditioner switch "ON" and then for more than 5 minutes with the air conditioner switch "OFF".
