Power Steering Pump: Reassembly

  1. Lubricate "O" rings and internal pump components with ATF Dexron II fluid before reassembly. Install new pump shaft seal in pump housing. Install new pressure plate "O" ring to third groove from end of pump housing. Insert both dowel pins into pump housing.
  2. Install thrust plate and rotor to pump shaft. Install new snap ring to pump shaft. Ensure rotor is installed with countersunk side toward thrust plate.
  3. Install pump shaft into pump housing. Make sure thrust plate slides over dowel pins properly. Install pump ring into pump housing, over dowel pins. Ensure arrow on ring faces rear of pump housing.
  4. Install vanes in rotor. Make sure rounded edge of vanes face outward. Install pressure plate into pump housing and over dowel pins. Seat plate by depressing about .06" (1.6 mm) over "O" ring. Ensure circular depression (for spring) is toward rear of housing.
  5. Install new "O" ring in second groove from rear of pump housing. Place end plate spring in pressure plate groove. Press end plate into pump housing. Depress end plate just enough to install retaining ring. Ensure retaining ring seats properly. Press pulley bracket onto shaft.


  1. Lubricate "O" rings and internal pump components with Dexron II ATF before reassembly. Install flow control valve spring and control valve in pump body. Install and tighten pressure connector. Depress control valve to check for smooth operation. Apply grease to lip of oil seal. Install oil seal into pump body.
  2. Install side plate with chamfered edge toward rotor, rotor with chamfered inner bore toward pump cover, and collar with chamfered edge toward rotor on pump shaft. Tighten pulley nut temporarily. Hold snap ring on shaft with snap ring pliers.
  3. Install "O" ring and side plate spring to pump body. Install vanes with rounded edges outward onto rotor. Insert shaft assembly with vanes to pump body. Do not damage pump shaft seal lip.
  4. Install cam ring with chamfered edge toward side plate. Install and tighten suction plate.
