Fuel Injection Pump: Removal

  1. Remove the timing belt upper cover. Remove the nut and washer securing the injection pump sprocket. Take care not to drop the nut and washer into the lower cover.
  2. Turn the crankshaft to bring the No. 1 piston to top dead center on the compression stroke. Using a puller, disengage the sprocket from the pump tapered shaft.
CAUTION: When removing the sprocket, do not shock the drive shaft. Protect the timing belt against undue stress. After removal, DO NOT turn crankshaft.
  3. Disconnect boost compensator hose at the injection pump. Remove vacuum hoses from the vacuum regulating valve and injection pump. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect electrical harness connector at pump.
CAUTION: Fuel will be expelled when fuel hoses are removed. DO NOT smoke or work near heaters or other fire hazards.
  4. Remove fuel supply hose and return hose from the injection pump, then plug the nipples. Loosen union nuts and remove all injection pipes. When loosening union nuts, hold delivery valve holder on the injection pump head with a spanner to prevent it from rotating with the pipe nut.
  5. Remove the 2 injection pump mounting bolts, and then remove the mounting nuts and washers. Remove the injection pump mounting bracket from engine.
CAUTION: When holding the injection pump, DO NOT hold it by either the accelerator lever or the fast idle lever. These levers must not be removed from the pump. Doing either of these things could impair pump performance.
