Timing Belt Tension
- Remove timing belt upper cover. Bring piston in No. 1 cylinder to top dead center (TDC) on compression stroke. Check that timing marks are aligned. See Fig 1 .
- Loosen timing belt tensioner mounting bolts. See Fig 1 . This causes tensioner spring to work tensioning belt automatically.
- Turn crankshaft in normal direction (clockwise) through 2 teeth of camshaft sprocket and hold this position. Take care to turn the crankshaft smoothly as this will give the belt a fixed tension.
- Tighten 2 tensioner mounting bolts. In order to prevent free rotation of tensioner bracket, tighten upper side bolt and then tighten lower side bolt.
- Turn crankshaft counterclockwise until timing marks are aligned. Check belt tension by pushing down belt with forefinger at a point halfway between cam sprocket and injection pump sprocket. Deflection should be 5/32-3/16" (4-5 mm). Mount timing belt upper cover. See Fig 1 .
