Injection Pump Timing

  1. Rotate crankshaft to position cylinder No. 1 at TDC of compression stroke. Ensure timing marks on camshaft sprocket, injection pump sprocket and crankshaft sprocket are aligned. See Fig 1 .

  2. Loosen fuel injection lines on fuel injection pump, but do not remove lines. Loosen, do not remove, fuel injection pump mounting bolts and nuts.
  3. Remove plug from rear of injection pump. Set push rod distance of prestroke measuring adapter (MD 998384) to .40" (10.0 mm) by rotating adjusting nut. Install adapter and dial indicator into hole at rear of injection pump. See Fig 2 .
  4. Rotate crankshaft to position timing notch on crankshaft pulley at about 30° BTDC (cylinder No. 1). Set dial indicator at zero and ensure indicator remains at zero while rotating crankshaft slightly to left and right. Using a wrench, slowly rotate crankshaft until No. 1 cylinder is at 5° ATDC of compression stroke. Read dial indicator and record plunger stroke.
  5. If plunger stroke is less than specified, rotate pump counterclockwise. If plunger stroke is greater than specified, rotate pump clockwise. Tighten injection pump mounting bolts and nuts. Recheck plunger stroke.

  6. Tighten all fuel lines and remove prestroke measuring adapter and dial indicator. Using a new gasket, reinstall injection pump plug. Start engine and check for leaks.
