Idle Speed: Notes

  1. Turn off lights and accessories. Place transmission in neutral. Warm engine to normal operating temperature. Run engine at 2000-3000 RPM for more than 5 seconds. Allow engine to idle for 2 minutes. Check curb idle speed. If incorrect, adjust idle speed screw. See Fig 1 .

Fuel Injected Models

NOTE: Idle speed on fuel injected models is electronically controlled. Adjustment should be performed only when the Idle Speed Control (ISC) servo, throttle position sensor (TPS), injection mixer or throttle body have been removed or replaced.
  1. Start and warm engine to normal operating temperature. Stop engine. Disconnect accelerator cable from throttle lever at injection mixer. Loosen both TPS mounting screws, rotate TPS fully clockwise, and tighten mounting screws.
  2. Turn ignition switch on (engine off) for more than 15 seconds, then turn ignition off. This sets ISC servo at specified position. Disconnect wiring harness at ISC servo. Start engine and check idle speed. Adjust idle speed by turning idle speed adjusting screw. See Fig 2 .

  3. Stop engine and disconnect wiring harness at TPS. Install TPS adapter and digital voltmeter to TPS and reconnect wiring harness. See Fig 3 . Turn ignition switch on (engine off) and read TPS voltage output on voltmeter. Loosen TPS screws and rotate as required to obtain output voltage reading of .45-.51 volts.

  4. Fully open throttle valve and return to original position. Check and adjust TPS voltage output as required. After final adjustment of TPS, apply sealant to TPS mounting screws and tighten. Remove test equipment and reconnect wiring harness connectors.
  5. Start engine. Check and adjust idle speed as required. Stop engine. Turn ignition switch from off to on. After 15 seconds, turn ignition off. Connect accelerator cable and adjust as required.
