Component Testing

  1. While engine is cold and ambient air temperature is below 84°F (29°C), air control valve in snorkel should be in up (heat on) position.
  2. Start engine. As engine warms up, check temperature entering snorkel or at bi-metallic sensor. When temperature of incoming air is above 113°F (45°C), air control valve should be in down (heat off) position.
  3. Stop engine and remove air cleaner. Allow air cleaner to cool down to 86°F (30°C). Using an outside vacuum source, apply 15 in. Hg vacuum to bi-metallic sensor. With vacuum applied, control valve should open (heat on position). If control valve does not open, check vacuum motor operation.
  4. Use an outside vacuum source to check vacuum motor. With 10 in. Hg vacuum applied to motor, air control valve should be fully open (heat on position). If vacuum motor does not operate as outlined, replace air cleaner housing assembly.
