32 31 070 Removing And Installing / Replacing Lower Section Of Steering Spindle

IMPORTANT:
If the lower section of the steering spindle is separated from the power steering gear/steering column, this can result in damage to the steering column switch cluster when the steering wheel is turned!
Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Remove lower section of steering spindle from universal joint (do not pull out). See 32 31 211 REPLACING UNIVERSAL JOINT FOR LOWER SECTION OF STEERING SPINDLE .
- Remove trim panel for pedal assembly. See 51 45 185 REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING TRIM FOR PEDAL ASSEMBLY .
Remove air duct in footwell.
Mark installation position of lower section of steering spindle in relation to steering column.
Release clamping screw (1).
Return steering to straight-ahead drive setting and remove ignition key.
Pull lower section of steering spindle out of universal joint.
Detach lower section of steering spindle from steering column.
Installation:
Recut thread.
Replace clamping screw.
Clamping screw (1) must rest in groove of steering column.
Tightening torque. See STEERING AND WHEEL ALIGNMENT - TIGHTENING TORQUES - ALPINA .
After installation:
- Carry out steering angle sensor adjustment . See 61 31 996 CARRY OUT STEERING ANGLE SENSOR ADJUSTMENT .
- Turn steering wheel in both directions to full lockNOTE: The airbag warning lamp must not light up in the process.
- Check directional stability of car
