All-wheel drive system xDrive with transfer box (VTG): Notes

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 45 other vehicles, including the 2016 BMW M5, 2016 BMW 550i xDrive, 2016 BMW 550i, 2016 BMW 535i xDrive, and 2016 BMW 535i. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

xDrive is the all-wheel drive system from BMW. In future, this advanced xDrive will also be adopted for other series.

In addition to outstanding traction, further improved driving dynamics values were a high priority during the development. During normal straight-ahead driving, the front and rear axles are powered with the normal 40 to 60 force distribution. The front wheels are thus supplied with not too much drive torque and can optimally handle the job of steering.

When turning and in stable cornering, the transfer box transfers up to 80 percent of the force with electronically-controlled multidisc clutch to the rear axle. This increases the maneuverability of the vehicle and effectively prevents understeer. This ensures spontaneous and precise cornering steering and an easily-controllable drive behavior.
