Oil supply

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 45 other vehicles, including the 2016 BMW M5, 2016 BMW 550i xDrive, 2016 BMW 550i, 2016 BMW 535i xDrive, and 2016 BMW 535i. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

During braking and cornering, very high acceleration values may occur with the M5/M6. The centrifugal forces that are hereby developed push a large majority of the engine oil to the front area of the oil sump. If this is the case, the pendulum slide cell pump can no longer ensure the oil supply to the engine because no oil is available to be drawn in any longer. For this reason, an oil pump with vacuum stage and pressure stage (rotor and pendulum slide coil pump is used with the engine S63.

Oil spray nozzles are used to lubricate and cool the components in the engine S63 TOP. The principle of oil spray nozzles for piston bottom cooling is known. It has an integrated non-return valve so that it does not open and close until a specific oil pressure value has been reached. Each cylinder has its own oil spray nozzle that receives the correct installation position through its styling. In addition to the piston bottom cooling, they are also responsible for the lubrication of the gudgeon pins.

The engine S63 TOP has the full-flow oil filter that is known from engine N63. The full-flow oil filter is screwed into the oil sump from the bottom. A valve is integrated in the oil filter housing. For example, the valve can open a bypass around the filter when the engine oil is cold and viscous. This occurs when the pressure difference before and after the filter exceeds approximately 2.5 bar. The approved pressure difference has been increased from 2.0 to 2.5. This method ensures that the filter is bypassed significantly less and any dirt particles are filtered out more safely.

The engine S63 TOP has an external engine oil cooler below the cooling module to cool the engine oil. A thermostat is integrated in the oil sump to allow the engine oil to heat up quickly. The thermostat releases the inlet to the engine oil cooler from 100 °Celsius engine oil temperature.

The known oil condition sensor is used to monitor the oil level. An evaluation of the engine oil quality does not occur.
