TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN

Reference Number(s): SI M61 01 03, Date of Issue:  May 2015
MINI: R50, R53 (Cooper, Cooper S)
GROUP: General Electrical Systems
Superceded Bulletin(s): SI M61 01 03, Date of Issue:  April 2003

This Service Information bulletin supersedes SI M61 01 03 dated April 2003.

SUBJECT

Key Remote Bar Codes

SITUATION

Normally when replacing a BC1 (ZKE) module the key remote bar code data is read out of the faulty BC1 and transferred to the new BC1. In cases where this data can't be read out, the dealer must enter this data manually.

  1. When replacing a BC1 (ZKE) module the dealer is not able to locate the key bar codes that were supplied with the vehicle.
  2. When replacing a BC1 (ZKE) module or when adding an additional remote key, there is confusion as to the correct key bar code numbers to input into the tester when registering (logging) the keys.

CAUSE

  1. The key bar codes were discarded when the vehicle was delivered to the dealer or by the customer.
  2. The terminology used in the test plan for registering (logging) the key remotes is different from that in the functional description in ISTA.

PROCEDURE

Whenever a new vehicle is delivered to the dealer, the bar code tags attached to the remote keys should be placed in the vehicle portfolio according to the QC1 checklist. If the key tags cannot be found, contact Technical Support by submitting a PuMA case. Since the codes must be obtained from overseas, they will normally be provided the following day.

  1. For registering (logging) remote control keys in the BC1 (ZKE) with ISTA, the following procedure is to be used:
    • When adding an additional remote control key
    • When the BC1 (ZKE) has been replaced, and the key data cannot be transferred from the failed BC1 (ZKE)
      1. Obtain the key tags that contain the bar codes for each remote control key, or the codes supplied by the Technical Support.
      2. Using ISTA, select the test plan via "Service Functions / 03 Body / ZKE Central body electrics / Log remote control key on/off." Then select the test plan "Log remote control key on and off."
      3. Select (1) and "Read out key data." The key positions that are not used are indicated by codes that have all places as "F." Note these positions down as available for logging additional remote control keys.
      4. Select (2) "Logging in a new remote control key" and continue.
      5. Select a free key position as noted previously (see step c) and continue.

      6. The next screen will prompt you to enter basic code (base code). Read off the bar code positions 3-8 (see step a). Enter the 6 characters using the onscreen keypad. Example: Using the bar code in the illustration the basic code would be 2535EE  .
      7. The next screen will prompt you to enter the variable code (random code). Read off the bar code positions 9-14 (see step a). Enter the 6 characters using the onscreen keypad. Example: Using the bar code in the illustration the variable code would be 2535ED  .
      8. The next screen will prompt you to enter the encoding code (encryption code). Read off the bar code positions 15, 16, 20-33 (see step a). Enter the 16 characters using the onscreen keypad. Note that (*) and (_) count as places in the bar code. Example: Using the bar code in the illustration the encoding code would be FFFFFFFFFFDACA11  .
      9. The next screen has you checking the data of the remote control key that you just entered. Compare the data shown on the screen with the key bar codes from the vehicle (see step a).
      10. If the data is correct then follow the onscreen prompts and the bar code data will be written to the selected key position the ZKE. Repeat the procedure above for additional remote control keys making sure that the bar code data is different for each key and is correctly input.
