Ignition Timing

NOTE: Timing adjustment on EEC-IV equipped vehicles is not a normal tune-up procedure.
  1. Place transmission selector in Park (auto. trans.) or Neutral (man. trans.). Ensure A/C is off. Connect an inductive timing light to No. 1 spark plug wire. Connect an accurate tachometer to engine.
  2. Disconnect single wire Black connector located near distributor. Start engine and warm up to operating temperature. Check and adjust idle speed to 825-975 RPM (man. trans.) or 925-1075 RPM (auto. trans.).
  3. Aim the timing light at crankshaft pulley. Check timing mark notch on pulley against degree scale. If necessary, loosen distributor clamp bolt and adjust timing. Stop engine. Reconnect single wire Black connector and remove test equipment.
