Pinpoint Test A: The Windshield Wipers Are Inoperative

  1. A1 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCS FROM BOTH CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND SJB SELF-TEST 
    NOTE: If DTC B1359 is retrieved, repair this DTC before proceeding with this test.
    • Use the recorded SJB DTCs.
    • Are any DTCs recorded?
    • Yes  : For DTC B1359, REFER to STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES .

      For DTC B1465 and B1466, GO to  A12.

      For DTC B1432, GO to  A6.

      For DTC B1438, GO to  A3.

      For DTC B1446, GO to  A6.

      For DTC B1465, GO to  A12.

      For DTC B1466, GO to  A3.

    • No  : GO to  A2.
  2. A2 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE AT SMART JUNCTION BOX (SJB) FUSE 23 (30A) 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: SJB Fuse 23 (30A).
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between input terminal of SJB fuse 23 (30A) and ground.

    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? 
    • Yes  : GO to  A3.
    • No  : REPAIR the power supply to SJB. TEST system for normal operation.
  3. A3 CHECK THE MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH INPUT TO THE SJB MONITOR SJB PID WIPER RUN 
    • Connect: SJB Fuse 23 (30A).
    • Monitor the SJB PID wiper run while turning the multifunction switch through all positions.
    • Do the PID values agree with the multifunction switch positions? 
    • Yes  : GO to  A6.
    • No  : GO to  A4.
  4. A4 CHECK THE MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Multifunction Switch C202a.
    • Disconnect: Multifunction Switch C202b.
    • Carry out the multifunction switch component test. Refer to COMPONENT TESTING for component testing.
    • Did the multifunction switch pass the component test? 
    • Yes  : GO to  A5.
    • No  : INSTALL a new multifunction switch. REFER to STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  5. A5 CHECK THE MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH GROUND CIRCUIT FOR OPEN 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Multifunction Switch C202b.
    • Measure the resistance between multifunction switch C202b pin 5, circuit 651 (BK/YE), harness side and ground.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    • Yes  : GO to  A16.
    • No  : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  6. A6 CHECK THE SJB - MONITOR THE SJB PID WIPER RUN 
    • Key in ON position.
    • Turn the multifunction switch to the ON/LOW position.
    • Monitor the SJB PID for the wiper run.
    • Does PID indicate a short to power? 
    • Yes  : GO to  A11.
    • No  : GO to  A7.
  7. A7 CHECK THE SJB OUTPUT 
    • Select SJB active command for the wiper relay.
    • Trigger the wiper relay to ON.
    • Do the wipers operate? 
    • Yes  : GO to  A16.
    • No  : GO to  A8.
  8. A8 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE AT WIPER RUN/PARK RELAY 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Wiper Run/Park Relay.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between wiper run/park relay pin 1, circuit 950 (WH/BK), BJB side and ground; and between wiper run/park relay pin 5, circuit 950 (WH/BK), BJB side and ground.

    • Are the voltages greater than 10 volts? 
    • Yes  : GO to  A9.
    • No  : REPAIR power supply to BJB. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  9. A9 CHECK THE WIPER RUN/PARK RELAY 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Carry out the relay component test on the wiper run/park relay. Refer to COMPONENT TESTING for component testing.
    • Did the wiper run/park relay pass the component test? 
    • Yes  : GO to  A10.
    • No  : INSTALL a new wiper run/park relay. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  10. A10 CHECK CIRCUIT 61 (YE/RD) FOR OPEN 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Wiper Hi/Low Relay.
    • Measure the resistance between wiper run/park relay pin 3, circuit 61 (YE/RD), BJB side and wiper hi/lo relay pin 3, circuit 61 (YE/RD), BJB side.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    • Yes  : GO to  A12.
    • No  : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  11. A11 CHECK CIRCUIT 646 (YE/WH) FOR SHORT TO POWER 
    • Disconnect: Wiper Run/Park Relay.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between wiper run/park relay pin 2, circuit 646 (YE/WH), BJB side and ground.

    • Is any voltage indicated? 
    • Yes  : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
    • No  : GO to  A16.
  12. A12 CHECK CIRCUIT 646 (YE/WH) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Disconnect: SJB C2280d.
    • Measure the resistance between wiper run/park relay pin 2, circuit 646 (YE/WH), BJB side and SJB C2280d pin 11, circuit 646 (YE/WH), harness side.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    • Yes  : GO to  A13.
    • No  : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  13. A13 CHECK CIRCUIT 57 (BK) FOR OPEN 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Wiper Motor C125.
    • Measure the resistance between the wiper motor C125 pin 3, circuit 57 (BK), harness side and ground.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    • Yes  : GO to  A14.
    • No  : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  14. A14 CHECK THE SJB OUTPUT 
    • Key in ON position.
    • Select SJB active command for the wiper relay.
    • Trigger wiper relay to ON.
    • Measure the voltage between the wiper motor C125 pin 2, circuit 58 (WH), harness side and ground.
    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? 
  15. A15 CHECK THE WIPER MOTOR 
  16. A16 CHECK FOR CORRECT SJB OPERATION 
    • Disconnect all SJB connectors.
    • Check:
      • for corrosion
      • for pushed-out pins
    • Connect all SJB connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
    • Yes  : INSTALL a new SJB. REFER to MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES .
    • No  : The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
