Exhaust System

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2006 Mercury Grand Marquis and 2006 Ford Crown Victoria. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING: The normal operating temperature of the exhaust system is very high. Never attempt to service any part of the system until it has cooled. Be especially careful when working around the catalytic converter. The temperature of the catalytic converter rises to a high level after only a few minutes of engine operation.
CAUTION: When servicing the exhaust system or removing exhaust components, disconnect all heated oxygen sensors (HO2S) at the wiring connectors to prevent damage to the heated oxygen sensors and wiring harness.
CAUTION: When installing new exhaust hanger brackets, make sure to apply threadlock to the hanger-to-frame fasteners.
NOTE: The production muffler and tailpipe assembly is a one-piece design. The service muffler and tailpipe assembly is serviced with two pieces.
  1. The exhaust system:
    • contains a one-piece catalytic converter assembly on each side.
    • has a single or dual exhaust system.
    • has muffler brackets, with isolators at the muffler and the rear of the tailpipe, bolted to the body.
    • has 2 heated oxygen sensors (HO2S).
    • has 2 catalyst monitor sensors.
    • production muffler and tailpipe assembly is a one-piece design exhaust system.
