Test B: Alarm System Does Not Arm/Disarm With Remote Transmitter

NOTE: Tests included in this test procedure are written specifically for Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS) tester or New Generation Star (NGS) tester functionality. Other OBD II-compatible scan tools may be used, but may not be equipped with equal test function capabilities. Refer to scan tool manufacturer's instructions.
  1. Using driver's door switch, lock and unlock doors. If door locks operate correctly, go to next step. If door locks do not operate correctly, repair door locks as necessary. See appropriate POWER DOOR LOCKS & REMOTE KEYLESS ENTRY SYSTEMS - SABLE & TAURUS article.
  2. Connect Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS) tester or New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC), DLC is located under instrument panel between steering column and the radio. See Figure. Using WDS or NGS tester, monitor transmitter TIC/DATA. Also monitor GEM active command PROGRAM TIC selected from 4 memory locations. If 2 TICs are stored at TIC 1, TIC 2, TIC 3 and TIC 4 positions, go to next step. If no TICs are stored at TIC 1, TIC 2, TIC 3 and TIC 4 positions, reprogram keyless entry remote transmitter. See REMOTE TRANSMITTER  under PROGRAMMING. After repair, test system for normal operation.
  3. Using WDS or NGS tester, monitor GEM PID LAST TIC/DATA RECEIVED while pressing and releasing remote transmitter lock and unlock buttons. If 8 digit code appears for LAST TIC RECEIVED and LAST TIC RECEIVED matches button pressed, go to step  5. If no 8 digit code appears for LAST TIC RECEIVED and LAST DATA RECEIVED does not match button pressed, go to next step.
  4. Monitor GEM PID TIC/DATA while pressing and releasing remote transmitter lock and unlock buttons on second transmitter. If 8 digit code appears for LAST TIC RECEIVED and LAST DATA RECEIVED matches button pressed, inspect remote transmitter batteries. For battery replacement, see KEYLESS ENTRY REMOTE TRANSMITTER - BATTERY REPLACE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If batteries are okay, replace or program keyless entry remote transmitter. See REMOTE TRANSMITTER  under PROGRAMMING. After repair, test system for normal operation. If no 8 digit code appears for LAST TIC RECEIVED and LAST DATA RECEIVED does not match button pressed, go to next step.
  5. Using WDS or NGS tester, monitor transmitter TIC/DATA. Compare results from step 2)  . If TIC RECEIVED matches one of the TICs recorded on step 2)  , go to next step. If TIC RECEIVED does not matches TICs recorded on step 2)  , reprogram remote keyless entry transmitter. See REMOTE TRANSMITTER  under PROGRAMMING. After repair, test system for normal operation.
  6. Using WDS or NGS tester, monitor transmitter TIC/DATA. If each button pressed on remote transmitter creates LAST TIC RECEIVED output, go to next step. If each button pressed on remote transmitter does not create LAST TIC RECEIVED output, reprogram keyless entry remote transmitter. See REMOTE TRANSMITTER  under PROGRAMMING. After repair, test system for normal operation.
  7. Disconnect all GEM harness connectors. Inspect for corrosion or pushed out pins. Reconnect all GEM harness connectors, ensuring they are connected correctly. Operate system and verify if concern is still present. If concern is still present, replace GEM. See GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If concern is not present, system is operating correctly at this time. After repair, clear DTCs and retest system for normal operation.
