Self-Diagnostic System

NOTE: Tests included in this article are written specifically for Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS) tester or New Generation Star (NGS) tester functionality. Other OBD II-compatible scan tools may be used, but may not be equipped with equal test function capabilities. Refer to scan tool manufacturer's instructions.
NOTE: Before checking for any communication concern, inspect Data Link Connector (DLC) for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. DLC is located under instrument panel between steering column and the radio. See Fig 1

Connect Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS) tester or New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC), DLC is located under instrument panel between steering column and the radio. See Fig 1. Using WDS or NGS tester, perform data link diagnostic test. See DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in appropriate MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK - SABLE & TAURUS article. After data link diagnostic test results are retrieved, perform the following as applicable:

(1) Codes listed in this table are only for testing covered in this article. For complete DTC listing, see appropriate MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK - SABLE & TAURUS article.
(2) Using WDS or NGS tester, retrieve and document all continuous DTCs. Perform Generic Electronic Module (GEM) self-test. If DTC B1342 is retrieved again, replace GEM. See GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
