Test C: Invalid Key Code Format From Encoded Ignition Key Transponder
NOTE:
Powertrain Control Module (PCM) disables engine for 20 seconds every time DTC B1601 is set. Ignition switch must remain in ON position for at least 20 seconds before attempting to start vehicle. Using NGS tester, check PCM PID ANTISCAN for unprogrammed key time-out status.
NOTE:
If PCM is replaced, PCM MUST be reprogrammed. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. All encoded ignition keys MUST be programmed into PCM. See KEY PROGRAMMING - WITHOUT USING 2 PROGRAMMED KEYS
under PROGRAMMING.
- Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester at Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using NGS tester, clear continuous DTCs. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Retrieve continuous DTCs. If DTC B1601 is retrieved, go to next step. If no DTCs are retrieved, system is okay at this time. Ensure all customer encoded ignition keys are programmed by attempting to start vehicle with all other encoded ignition keys.
- Using NGS tester, monitor PCM PID NUMKEYS. If PID indicates less than 8, go to next step. If PID indicates 8, erase and reprogram all keys to be used with system. See KEY PROGRAMMING - ERASE ALL KEYS & PROGRAM 2 KEYS under PROGRAMMING. Clear DTCs and recheck system.
- Verify that at least 2 programmed encoded ignition keys are available with vehicle. If there is at least 2 programmed encoded ignition keys available with vehicle, go to next step. If there is not at least 2 programmed encoded ignition keys available with vehicle, cut and program at least 2 new encoded ignition keys. See KEY PROGRAMMING - WITHOUT USING 2 PROGRAMMED KEYS under PROGRAMMING. After programming 2 new encoded ignition keys, go to step 5 .
- Using NGS tester, monitor PCM PID SPARE_KEY. If PID indicates YES, program encoded ignition key. See KEY PROGRAMMING - USING 2 PROGRAMMED KEYS under PROGRAMMING. If PID does not indicate YES, perform KEY PROGRAMMING - SPARE KEY PROGRAMMING SWITCH under PROGRAMMING. Clear DTCs and recheck system.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Insert programmed encoded ignition key in ignition lock cylinder and turn ignition switch to ON position for 3 seconds. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Using another programmed encoded ignition key, turn ignition switch to ON position for 3 seconds. Start vehicle using second programmed encoded ignition key. If vehicle does not start, go to next step. If vehicle starts, see KEY PROGRAMMING - USING 2 PROGRAMMED KEYS under PROGRAMMING.
- Using NGS tester, clear continuous DTCs. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Retrieve continuous PCM DTCs. If DTC B1601 is retrieved, replace PCM. If DTC B1601 is not retrieved, system is okay at this time. If any other DTCs are retrieved, perform appropriate test. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE DTC INDEX table under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
