Shift Control Cable
CAUTION:
After completing linkage adjustments, verify neutral safety switch operates properly. With parking brake and service brakes applied, try to start engine in each gear position. Engine must crank only when gearshift lever is in Neutral and Park.
- Set shift lever to Neutral position. Remove spring clip and pin attaching shift cable trunnion to transaxle shift lever. Rotate transaxle shift lever fully counterclockwise to Park position, then rotate transaxle shift lever clockwise 2 detents to Neutral position.
- While rotating lever, position it between ends of shift cable trunnion. If hole in transaxle shift lever aligns with hole in shift cable trunnion, shift control cable is properly adjusted. If holes do not align, go to next step. If holes do align, go to step 5).
- Loosen lock nut and unscrew shift knob. Raise ashtray receptacle. Disconnect wiring. Remove shift quadrant. Loosen adjuster nuts on shift cable. Set shift lever to Park position. Observe position of detent spring roller. If spring roller is not centered in Park detent, loosen attaching screws and move detent spring forward or backward to center spring roller.
- Install shift quadrant. Set shift lever to Neutral position. Thread adjuster nuts up or down shift cable until holes in transaxle shift lever and shift cable trunnion align. See Fig 1.
- Tighten adjuster nuts to 71-97 INCH lbs. (8-11 N.m). Observe alignment of holes in transaxle shift lever and shift cable trunnion to see if adjustment was disturbed while tightening adjuster nuts.
- If adjustment was not disturbed, install transaxle shift lever-to-shift cable pin and retaining clip. With shift lever in Neutral position, press shift interlock button and carefully push shift lever forward while an assistant observes transaxle shift lever.
- When transaxle shift lever begins to move, note distance shift lever has moved. With shift lever in Neutral, press shift interlock button and carefully pull shift lever rearward while an assistant watches transaxle shift lever. When transaxle shift lever begins to move, note distance shift lever has moved.
- If forward and rearward movements of shift lever are not equal, rotate adjuster nuts slightly forward and rearward until distances are equal. Tighten adjuster nuts to 71-97 INCH lbs. (8-11 N.m). Install console. Install shift control knob.
