Section 3 (Anti-Lock Brake System): Operation

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 17 other vehicles, including the 1992 Mercury Cougar, 1992 Lincoln Mark VII, 1992 Ford Thunderbird, 1991 Mercury Cougar, and 1991 Lincoln Mark VII. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

ECM receives an AC signal from each wheel sensor. This information is translated into calculated wheel speed. When ECM determines that wheel lock-up is about to occur, solenoid valves are activated and deactivated to vary hydraulic pressure to each front wheel (separate circuits) and both rear wheels (one circuit) to prevent wheel lock-up.

Electric pump/motor assembly provides constant hydraulic pressure to actuation assembly. ABS does not operate during normal braking conditions. ABS has a self-diagnostic system to obtain trouble codes for testing purposes. See DIAGNOSIS  .
