The historical use of parameter and component names and definitions by various manufacturers has resulted in several names for a similar item. Diagnostic applications' using similar names for similar functions can be confusing to the service technician. This section provides recommendations for the naming of components, parameters and abbreviations based upon Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) recommendations. It also provides recommendations for the naming of commonly found diagnostic software application functions based upon historic naming standards used within the heavy-duty industry.
