Basic Program Requirements
When establishing a driver incentive program, fleet management should:
- Know its capabilities and limitations.
- Provide its full commitment.
- Understand that routine and timely payouts are necessary.
- Be able to collect relevant data.
- Have a reliable and accurate data collection system/procedures using either satellite technology, electronic engine module (ECM) reports, or other reports (such as credit card reports, etc.).
- Rate its ability to spec trucks for fuel economy
- Excellent
- Fair
- Poor
- Consider number of vehicle groups in the fleet (i.e., type of operation/age/engine)
- Ensure vehicles within groups are similarly equipped
- Identify how many different groups are within the fleet (i.e., less than five, 5-10, more than 10, etc.)
- Must set standards fairly (i.e., make performance standards equipment specific).
- Electronic vs. mechanical engines
- With or without aerodynamics
- Newer vs. older vehicles
- Cold vs. hot climates
- Terrain
