Engine 642 in model 907
When carrying out work on the timing case recesses and cylinder heads, they must be protected with a clean cloth against falling small parts. Parts which have fallen into the timing case recess or cylinder head, must be removed.
Engine damage could occur otherwise.
- Check that the
hold-down tool (4) is seated correctly on the right cylinder head on the intake camshaft side.
If necessary,
↓
Release hold-down tool (4) and fasten correctly.
The basic position of the engine must be set up if there is skipping of the new timing chain (2) or old timing chain (1) on the camshaft sprocket or on the crankshaft gear.
Engine damage could occur otherwise.
Do not crank engine in opposite direction of engine rotation.
Damage may occur otherwise.
Prepare assembly link.
Assembly links are stored in the
case. Use corresponding
assembly link for timing chains (1, 2).
- Connect end link of the new timing chain (2) and end link of the old timing chain (1) to the assembly connecting link (3.1), assembly shackle (3.2), and assembly locking element (3.3) and secure.
Ensure that assembly locking element (3.3) is seated correctly.
Timing chains (2) with oil holes (5) are installed with oil holes (5) pointing outward.
- Remove cloth from the timing case shaft and remove right cylinder head.
Otherwise, it will be drawn into the timing case shaft when the engine is rotated.
- Slowly turn engine at center bolt of the crankshaft with
socket wrench socket in the direction of engine rotation. While doing so, pull in the new timing chain (2) evenly while letting out the old timing chain (1) at the same time.
Turn engine until the end links of the new timing chain (2) can be connected to the right intake camshaft sprocket.
Aid of helper required.
- Cover timing case shaft and right cylinder head with a clean cloth.
- Remove assembly locking element (3.3), assembly shackle (3.2), and assembly connecting link (3.1) and place old timing chain (1) to one side.
Do not start engine with assembly locking element (3.3), assembly link (3.2) and assembly connecting link (3.1).
Engine damage could occur otherwise.
- Connect end links of new timing chain (2) provisionally with assembly connecting link (3.1) and assembly shackle (3.2) and secure using assembly locking element (3.3).
- Remove cloth from the timing case shaft and remove right cylinder head.
- Slowly turn engine at center bolt of the crankshaft with
socket wrench socket in the direction of engine rotation.
If there is skipping of the new timing chain (2) on the camshaft sprocket or crankshaft gear, the basic position of the engine must be set.
Engine damage could occur otherwise.
Do not crank engine in opposite direction of engine rotation.
Damage may occur otherwise.
Turn engine until the connected end links of the new timing chain (2) are accessible at a suitable location on the left exhaust camshaft sprocket.
- Cover timing case shaft and left cylinder head with a clean cloth.
- Fix new timing chain (2) in place with cable ties at suitable locations on the left exhaust camshaft sprocket.
The assembly link must be accessible for removing the assembly locking element (3.3), assembly shackle (3.2), and assembly connecting link (3.1).
- Remove assembly locking element (3.3) and remove assembly shackle (3.2) and assembly connecting link (3.1).
Replace assembly connecting link (3.1), assembly shackle (3.2), and assembly locking element (3.3) with a new riveted link.
Engine damage can occur otherwise.
- Remove cable ties.
- Remove cloth from timing case shaft and left cylinder head.
