Overview

This document contains information on:

General

The rack-and-pinion steering is used to transfer the steering torque in its role as steering gear.

Function

The rack-and-pinion steering is located in front of the front axle and mounted on the integral carrier. The transmission input shaft of the rack-and-pinion steering is connected to the diagonally-toothed drive pinion via a torsion bar. The pinion engages in the gear rack toothing. The tie rods are connected with both ends of the toothed rack via ball joints. The rack-and-pinion steering is protected from contamination by seal bellows.IMPORTANT With the Direct-Steer system, the rack-and-pinion steering has a variable gear ratio. In other words, the tooth split becomes greater in the range ± 6° to ± 90° steering wheel from the center position. The drive pinion and the toothed rack convert the steering torque applied by the driver into axial force. The toothed rack, tie rods and tie rod ends transmit the axial force to the steering knuckles of the front wheels.
