Location
The all-wheel drive actuator is located on the all-wheel drive control unit.
Task
The all-wheel drive control unit actuates the drive torque distribution through the all-wheel drive actuator. The all-wheel drive actuator operates a multiplate clutch and thereby changes the distribution of drive torque to the front and rear axle. If the multiplate clutch is open, the entire drive torque is transferred to the rear axle. If the multiplate clutch is closed, up to 50 % of the drive torque is transferred to the front axle. The driver has no influence on the distribution of drive torque.
The all-wheel drive control unit is connected through the suspension FlexRay (Flex E) to the vehicle's network topology.
To implement the drive torque distribution, the all-wheel drive control unit also processes the following information:
- Terminal status of terminal 15
- Engine speed
- Engine torque
- Actual gear
- Transmission selector position
- Wheel speeds
- ESP® status
- Traction system status
- Steering wheel angle
- Steering angle speed
- Wheel angle
- Vehicle level
The all-wheel drive control unit actuates the all-wheel drive actuator accordingly and sends information on the drive torque distribution and system status to the instrument cluster. This information is shown on the instrument cluster.
