Pedestrian protection function - GF91.60-P-1005GN

MODEL 166 as of model year 2016 with CODE U60 (Active Bonnet (Pedestrian protection))

MODEL 292 with CODE U60 (Active Bonnet (Pedestrian protection))

Function requirements, general

IMPORTANT The electronic ignition lock control unit (N73) sends the status of circuit 15 via chassis CAN 1 (CAN E1) to the supplemental restraint system control unit (N2/10).

The instrument cluster (A1) sends the vehicle speed via chassis CAN 2 (CAN E2), electronic ignition lock control unit and chassis CAN 1 to the supplemental restraint system control unit.

Pedestrian protection, general

The pedestrian protection reduces the level of injury severity in the event of any collision with a pedestrian. The cavity between the engine hood and the components below is increased by the engine hood moving up suddenly in the area of the A-pillars. This space prevents the pedestrian from being hit directly by the components below the engine hood.

Pedestrian protection includes the following subfunctions:

Function sequence for impact detection

The Supplemental Restraint System control unit reads in the signals directly from the following sensors:

The pedestrian protection is actuated according to the acceleration values measured

The pedestrian protection can be actuated erroneously in collisions with other objects (e.g. poles, guide posts or thick branches).

Function sequence for activating pedestrian protection

The engine hood is lifted in the area of the A-pillars using the engine hood lifter. To do so, the Supplemental Restraint System control unit actuates the following squibs directly:

The status of the active engine hood squibs is monitored by the Supplemental Restraint System control unit. In the event of faults, a corresponding message is shown in the multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster. The request for this is sent by the supplemental restraint system control unit over chassis CAN 1, electronic ignition lock control unit and chassis CAN 2 to the instrument cluster.

IMPORTANT Raising the engine hood has no further effects on the triggering behavior of the supplemental restraint system.

IMPORTANT MODEL 166 as of model year 2016 with CODE 489 (AIRMATIC) with CODE U60 (Active Bonnet (Pedestrian protection))

MODEL 292 with CODE 489 (AIRMATIC) with CODE U60 (Active Bonnet (Pedestrian protection))

The triggering threshold for pedestrian protection is raised when driving off-road to avoid inadvertent activation. The AIRMATIC control unit (N51/3) sends the status of the vehicle level via chassis CAN 1 to the supplemental restraint system control unit.
