General Media Interface function requirements 

Media interface, general 

The Media Interface system is also known as the "Universal Consumer Electronic Interface" or the "Universal Device Connecting Point". The following portable devices can be connected to this universal consumer electronic interface cable using an adapter cable:

IMPORTANT In vehicles as of 1.7.2011 with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer or code (526) COMAND with single DVD drive (without navigation) or code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or code (528) COMAND incl. DVD changer) If you try to connect a USB memory stick to the media interface electrical connector using an adapter cable, the following message appears on the Audio/COMAND display (A408) "Note: Please connect device to the other USB port". The USB electrical connector (X115) for connecting USB memory sticks is also located in the stowage compartment (telephone compartment) under the center armrest.

IMPORTANT The AUX connection electrical connector (X39/45) (up to 28.2.2013) in the glove box is not required.

The portable terminal is connected to the audio equipment via the adapter cable, the media interface electrical connector (X18/70), the media interface control unit (N125/1) and the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST). The following data formats are supported:

In vehicles with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer or code (527) COMAND APS with Single DVD drive (with navigation), without code (218) Reversing camera, video data can also be processed and displayed.

If the audio equipment does not support the connected portable terminal, the portable terminal is deeply discharged or the media interface electrical connector is defective, an appropriate message is output via the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8).

The portable terminal is operated via menu guidance in the audio equipment, which can be operated via one of the following controls:

IMPORTANT Menu guidance is displayed on the audio-/COMAND display, depending on the portable device connected:

The user can display the audio data by selecting the relevant submenus:

IMPORTANT "Standard" or "Boost" can be selected under the "volume" menu for the "Aux" audio source (via the Media Interface adapter cable). The input level can be increased by selecting "Boost".

Function sequence for media interface 

The media interface control unit detects portable terminals (only "iPod" and USB) when connected via the media interface electrical connector and the adapter cable. The media interface control unit transmits a signal to the audio equipment, which then switches to the connected source.

IMPORTANT The "Aux" audio source must be selected on the audio equipment for AUX devices. Operation takes place on the AUX device.

The "Media Interface" menu and the respective submenu is selected using one of the following controls:

The control signals from the buttons on the "Audio equipment" are processed internally.

The settings are transmitted over the audio/COMAND control panel to the audio equipment via the telematics CAN (CAN A).

The control signals of the multifunction steering wheel button groups are forwarded to the "audio equipment" via the following route:

The VCS voice commands are forwarded by the hands-free system microphone (A67b1) to the audio equipment.

After the audio equipment has processed the control signals, it transmits the corresponding requests to the portable device over the following path:

The portable terminal evaluates the requests and transmits the corresponding audio signal and data in the opposite direction to the audio equipment.

Video signals and data (with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer) are transmitted by the media interface electrical connector directly to the COMAND controller unit (A40/3).

The video signals and data are prepared internally by the COMAND controller unit and transmitted via a low voltage differential signal (LVDS) line to the Audio/COMAND display.

In vehicles with code (810) Sound system, the audio equipment forwards the audio signals via MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit (N40/3). The sound system amplifier control unit emits the audio signals at the speaker system.

On vehicles without code (810) Sound system, the audio signals are emitted by the audio equipment over the following speakers via direct lines:
