3 data bus systems are essentially responsible for the overall network (GVN):
- Interior CAN
- Engine compartment CAN
- Media Oriented System Transport (MOST)
Following data bus systems are also used:
- Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) CAN (CAN CNG), in vehicles with code (MZ2) Natural gas engine M271 or code (MZ8) NGT engine EEV
- Body manufacturer CAN (CAN ABH), in vehicles with code (ED5) Parameterizable special module (PSM) or with code (ED8) Preinstallation for parameterizable special module (PSM)
- Drive train sensor CAN (CAN I) on vehicles with engine 642 with code (MG5) Engine OM 642 DE 30 LA, 140 kW (190 hp) 3800 rpm, with code (MH1) Low-pollutant engine EPA 10/CARB, with engine 642 with code (MG5) Engine OM 642 DE 30 LA, 140 kW (190 hp) 3800 rpm, with code (MH1) Low-pollutant engine EPA 10/CARB, with code (ZU8) USA national version

The operational field is differentiated as follows:
- The interior CAN links the control units of comfort functions and lighting devices in the vehicle (e.g. power window, heated rear window, exterior lights and interior illumination).
- The engine compartment CAN links the control units of the drive and chassis systems (e.g. engine timing, transmission control).
- The MOST networks the control units for the audio, communications and navigation systems (e.g. telephone, with code (EH3) Universal preinstallation for networked mobile phone) via a fiber optic cable.
- The Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) CAN, in vehicles with code (MZ2) Natural gas engine M271 or code (MZ8) NGT engine EEV, connects the ME-SFI [ME] control unit (N3/29) to the CNG interface control unit (N118/2).
- The drive train sensor CAN on vehicles with engine 642 with code (MG5) Engine OM 642 DE 30 LA, 140 kW (190 hp) 3800 rpm, with code (MH1) Low-pollutant engine EPA 10/CARB, with engine 642 with code (MG5) Engine OM 642 DE 30 LA, 140 kW (190 hp) 3800 rpm, with code (MH1) Low-pollutant engine EPA 10/CARB, with code (ZU8) USA national version connects the CDI control unit (N3/30) to the AdBlue® control unit (N141)
- The body manufacturer CAN, in vehicles with code (ED5) Parameterizable special module (PSM) or with code (ED8) Preinstallation for parameterizable special module (PSM), connects the PSM control unit to the control units of the various body manufacturers.
- On vehicles with engine 651, the drivetrain LIN connects the CDI control unit (N3/28) to the alternator with LIN bus (G2/7) and to the glow output stage (N14/5).
- On vehicles with engine 642 with code (MG5) Engine OM 642 DE 30 LA, 140 kW (190 hp) 3800 rpm, with code (MH1) Low-pollutant engine EPA 10/CARB, with engine 642 with code (MG5) Engine OM 642 DE 30 LA, 140 kW (190 hp) 3800 rpm, with c ode (MH1) Low-pollutant engine EPA 10/CARB, with code (ZU8) USA national version, the drivetrain LIN connects the CDI control unit to the alternator with LIN bus and to the glow output stage (N14/3).
More stringent requirements are placed on the engine compartment CAN with regard to interference resistance, e.g. against electromagnetic radiation, and the data transfer rate.
Data exchange between the data bus systems
The following control units form the interfaces between the data bus systems:
- The EZS control unit is connected to the interior CAN and engine compartment CAN.
- The radio/radio with navigation, with code (EN8) Sound 50 APS radio or with code (EN4) COMAND with TMC interface, forms the interface between the interior CAN and MOST.
- In vehicles with code (MZ2) Natural gas engine M271 or code (MZ8) NGT engine EEV, the ME-SFI [ME] control unit forms the interface between the engine compartment CAN and the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) CAN.
- In vehicles with code (ED5) Parameterizable special module (PSM) or with code (ED8) Preinstallation for parameterizable special module (PSM), the PSM control unit forms the interface between the interior CAN and the body manufacturer CAN.
- On vehicles with engine 651, the CDI control unit forms the interface between the engine compartment CAN and the drivetrain LIN.
- On vehicles with engine 642 with code (MG5) Engine OM 642 DE 30 LA, 140 kW (190 hp) 3800 rpm, with code (MH1) Low-pollutant engine EPA 10/CARB, with engine 642 with code (MG5) Engine OM 642 DE 30 LA, 140 kW (190 hp) 3800 rpm, with c ode (MH1) Low-pollutant engine EPA 10/CARB, with code (ZU8) USA national version, the CDI control unit forms the interface between the engine compartment CAN and the drivetrain LIN and between the engine compartment CAN and the drive train sensor CAN.
The EZS control unit also forms the interface between the control units at the interior CAN and at the engine compartment CAN and the line to the 16-pin diagnostic socket (X11) for Star Diagnosis.
Instrument cluster
Although the instrument cluster is connected to both the interior CAN and the engine compartment CAN and exchanges data with both data bus systems, it is not used as an interface (gateway).
With all control units of the interior CAN, the international standardized network management "OSEK" (Open Systems and the Corresponding Interfaces for Automotive Electronics) is used.
