General

Function requirements:

Enabled Subscriber identification module (SIM) card
Correct personal identification number (PIN) entry and successful log-in on the network

With the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI) system, all calls are made using the respective portable CTEL (A34/6) solely via the hands-free system.

The Universal Portable CTEL Interface system enables various portable CTELs (A34/6) to be operated in the vehicle. To this end, only the respective UPCI [UHI] portable CTEL holder (Universal Handy Interface) (A34/15) must be configured for the respective portable CTEL (A34/6).

The UPCI system consists of the following components:

Instrument cluster (A1)

Telephone antenna (A2/22)
UPCI Portable CTEL holder (Universal Portable CTEL Interface) (A34/15)
Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit (N123/1)

With code (494) USA version, the frequency switchover control unit (N96) is additionally installed.

Supported functions

The UPCI system supports the following functions:

SIM check after a fault and a lock status
PIN entry using the keypad in the COMAND operating, display and control unit's (A40/3) control panel as well as using the telephone buttons on each portable CTEL (A34/6)
Personal Unblocking Key (PUK) entry using telephone buttons of the respective portable CTEL (A34/6)
Display of telephone numbers and caller ID on the display of each portable CTEL (A34/6), in the left multifunction display (A1p13) and the right multifunction display (A1p15) of the instrument cluster (A1) and on the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) display
Provider names, reception status, roaming status and the call duration are shown on the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) display
Establishing of telephone connections in hands-free mode
Display of the stored telephone numbers from each portable CTEL (A34/6) in the left multifunction display (A1p13) and the right multifunction display (A1p15) of the instrument cluster (A1), as well as selection of stored telephone numbers using the multifunction steering wheel's scroll forward/back button (S110s1) and the system selection button (S110s3)

Universal Portable CTEL Interface system activation

The UPCI system is activated by one of the following actions:

By pressing the On/Off button of the respective portable CTEL (A34/6)
Automatically by a wake-up pulse via the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST), which is initiated by the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3)
Activation of "circuit 15R ON" status

Universal Portable CTEL Interface system deactivation

The UPCI system is deactivated by one of the following actions:

By pressing the On/Off button of the respective portable CTEL (A34/6)
Automatically following expiry of the individually adjustable run-on time of the respective portable CTEL (A34/6)
After removing the transmitter key (A8/1) and following expiry of the individually adjustable run-on time of the respective portable CTEL (A34/6)

Voice input and output

Voice input takes place over the hands-free system microphone group (A67b1) in the inside rearview mirror unit (A67).

Voice output is accomplished over the following audio speakers:

Left door speaker group (H4/1)
Right door speaker group (H4/2)
Center cockpit speaker (centerfill) (H4/27)

The respective portable CTEL (A34/6) must be plugged into the UPCI [UHI] portable CTEL holder (Universal Handy Interface) (A34/15) for voice output.

Voice input networking and information flow

Voice input information flow with code (494) USA version or with code (813) Voice control system (VCS [SBS]):

The hands-free system microphone group (A67b1) in the inside rearview mirror unit (A67) is read in discretely by the voice control system control unit (A35/11).
The voice control system control unit (A35/11) sends the signals to the MOST.
The Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit (N123/1) reads in the signals from the MOST and forwards them discretely to the UPCI [UHI] portable CTEL holder (Universal Handy Interface) (A34/15) and thus to the portable CTEL (A34/6).

Voice input information flow except code (494) USA version or except code (813) Voice control system (VCS [SBS]):

The hands-free system microphone group (A67b1) in the inside rearview mirror unit (A67) is read in discretely by the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit (N123/1).
The Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit (N123/1) forwards the signals discretely to the UPCI [UHI] portable CTEL holder (Universal Handy Interface) (A34/15) and thus to the portable CTEL (A34/6).

Voice output networking and information flow

Voice output information flow:

The portable CTEL (A34/6) receives the voice output over the telephone antenna (A2/22) and forwards this discretely via the UPCI [UHI] portable CTEL holder (Universal Handy Interface) (A34/15) to the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit (N123/1).
The Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit (N123/1) sends the signals to the MOST.
The sound amplifier (A2/13) reads the signals from the MOST and then discretely actuates the left door speaker group (H4/1), right door speaker group (H4/2) and the center cockpit speaker (centerfill) (H4/27).

The noise level in the interior is determined by the sound amplifier microphone (B25/6) and evaluated by the sound amplifier (A2/13). The voice output volume is automatically adapted by the sound amplifier (A2/13) to the noise level in the interior.
