The COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3) is used to centrally operate the following components and systems:

• Radio tuner in the audio gateway control unit (N93/1)
• Integrated DVD-ROM drive for audio CDs, video DVDs and MP3
• Navigation system
• CD player with changer (A2/6) (with code (819) 6-disk CD changer)
• Telephone system (with code (386) Preinstallation for telephone "Handy", UPCI system or code (388) Telephone "Handy", UPCI system
• Sound system (with code (810) Sound system)
• Voice control system (VCS [SBS]) with code (813) Voice control system (VCS [SBS])

Additional audio sources (e.g. MP3 player, Walkman) can be connected via the "Audio-AUX" interface. For this purpose, an AUX bushing is located in the glove compartment as connection facility.

The COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3) is the central component of the COMAND system.

It has a video-capable color display for outputting information.

It is operated using fixed function keys and 2 rotary switches as well as assisted by menus on the display of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3).

Several functions can also be activated with the aid of the multifunction steering wheel (MFL). It should be remembered in this case that all operations are first processed by the instrument cluster (A1). The instrument cluster (A1) links the incoming requests with the current menu setting in the left multifunction display and, where applicable, it then transmits a corresponding message to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3).
