MODEL 230 as of 1.6.04 up to 28.2.06 with CODE (388) "Portable CTEL" UPCI telephone system except CODE (494) USA version except CODE (498) Japan version

MODEL 230 as of 1.7.04 up to 31.3.06 with CODE (494) USA version with CODE (387) Preinstallation for telephone "Handy" UPCI system, USA/Canada

Function requirements:

IMPORTANT With the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI) system, all calls are made with the portable CTEL (A34/6) via the handsfree system. "Private mode" is not possible.

The Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit (N123/1) allows different portable CTELs (A34/6), e.g., Nokia, Siemens, and Motorola, to be operated in the vehicle alternatively. Only the respective UPCI portable CTEL holder (Universal Portable CTEL Interface) (A34/15) has to be replaced to do this. Moreover, Bluetooth-capable units can be operated (not USA).

If an emergency call system control unit (N123/4) (USA only) is installed, a frequency switchover control unit (N96) is installed between the telephone antenna splitter/portable CTEL/STH radio remote control (A2/53) and the E-net compensator (A28/3). In case of emergency, it directly switches the emergency call system control unit (N123/4) through to the telephone antenna (A2/22). If this is the case, no  phone call can be placed.

The Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI) system consists of the following components:

IMPORTANT The respective portable CTEL (A34/6) is connected to the vehicle's MOST ring via the UPCI [UHI] portable CTEL holder (Universal Portable CTEL Interface) (A34/15) and the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit (N123/1).

The Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI) system contains the following functions:

The Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI) system is activated using the on/off button on the portable CTEL (A34/6).

Automatic activation is also possible using a wake-up pulse via the MOST ring. It can be started via the "circuit 15 ON" status or the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) of the Comand operating and display system (without navigation) (standard) or with code (352) Comand APS (with navigation).

The Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI) system is deactivated using the on/off button on the portable CTEL (A34/6) or automatically after the run-on time set on the portable CTEL (A34/6).

Speech input takes place via the hands-free system microphone (B25). If a voice control system control unit (A35/11) with code (813) Voice control system (VCS [SBS]) is installed, the voice input is transmitted over the latter and the MOST ring to the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit (N123/1).

The voice is output over the speaker system. In order to ensure the most authentic possible voice input of the user via the hands-free system microphone (B25), the volume of an active audio source (e.g., the CD player with changer (A2/6)) is automatically muted during a telephone call. The volume of the speaker system can be individually adjusted by the user. This can be done using the + and a buttons integrated in the multifunction steering wheel (MFL), adjusting specific functions and volume control (S111s1), or using the portable CTEL (A34/6).

Further functions can be selected using additional buttons on the multifunction steering wheel (MFL):

This is done by a range of indicators notifying the user of the operating condition (e.g. "ENTER PIN") of the portable CTEL (A34/6) that appears in the displays of the following components:

IMPORTANT The Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI) system is compatible with the D-Net and the E-Net. This is made possible by installing the E-net compensator (A28/3), which compensates for the attenuation that occurs because of the higher frequency of the E-net.
