Task
The COMAND controller unit fulfills the following tasks:
- Computer for entertainment and communication systems
- Reading in of signals
- Evaluation of input factors
- Actuates output media
Computer for entertainment and communication systems
The COMAND controller unit provides the user with a structured and standard interface on the COMAND display (A40/8) (without code (867) SPLITVIEW) or the SPLITVIEW display (A40/10) (with code (867) SPLITVIEW).
The COMAND controller unit generates standard and user-friendly displays for all the individual components integrated into the system.
Reading in of signals
The input factors are read in via the following connections:
- Direct line
- Controller Area Network (data bus/CAN bus) (CAN)
- Media Oriented System Transport (MOST)
Direct line
The following signals are read in via direct lines:
- Wake-up (MOST)
- AUX input
- Global positioning system (GPS) signal
- Color Video Baseband Signal (CVBS) from reversing camera power supply module (N66/10) (for model 221 with code (218) Reversing camera)
- Y-brightness (luminance)/C-color data (chrominance) (Y/C) from TV combination tuner (analog/digital) (A90/1) (with code (863) Digital/analog TV tuner)
Controller Area Network (data bus/CAN bus) (CAN)
The signals are read in over the telematics CAN (CAN A) and central CAN (CAN F). The functions resulting therefrom are described in the corresponding function descriptions (see block diagram or function schematic).
Media Oriented System Transport (MOST)
The COMAND controller unit communicates with the following control units via MOST depending on the equipment specification:
- TV combination tuner (analog/digital) (A90/1) (with code (863) Digital/analog TV tuner)
- Voice control system (VCS [SBS]) control unit (N41/3) (up to 31.5.2009 with code (813) Voice control system (VCS [SBS]))
- Digital Audio Broadcasting control unit (N87/3) (with code (537) Digital radio)
- Audio tuner control unit (N93/1)
- Digital sound processor (A2/69) (model 221 as of 1.9.2010 with code (811) Advanced Sound System)
- UPCI [UHI] (Universal Portable Cell Phone Interface) control unit (N123/1) (up to 31.5.2009 with code (386) Preinstallation for telephone "Cell phone", UPCI [UHI] system)
- Media interface control unit (N125/1) (as of 1.6.2009 with code (518) Media interface)
Evaluation of input factors
The input factors are processed and evaluated by the COMAND controller unit.
Actuates output media
The output media are actuated through the following connection:
- Direct line
- CAN
- MOST
Direct line
The following output media are actuated over direct lines:
- COMAND display or SPLITVIEW display over low voltage differential signal (LVDS) line
- DVD player (A40/4) (for model 221 with code (864) Rear entertainment system) over low voltage differential signaling line
Low voltage differential signaling lines are used to transmit picture and video signals.
The following system components are actuated internally:
- Map navigation with hard drive (HDD) as data memory (with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation))
- Up to 31.5.2009: Card reader for Personal Computer Memory Card International Association (PCMCIA) cards with MP3 files
- As of 1.6.2009: Card reader for Secure Digital Memory Card (SD) cards
- DVD-ROM drive (single slot or 6-disk DVD changer with single slot (with code (814) DVD changer))
CAN
The signals are sent over the telematics CAN to the central CAN. The functions resulting therefrom are described in the corresponding function descriptions (see block diagram or function schematic).
MOST
The COMAND controller unit communicates with the following control units via MOST depending on the equipment specification:
- TV combination tuner (analog/digital)
- Voice control system (VCS [SBS]) control unit
- Digital Audio Broadcasting control unit
- Audio tuner control unit
- Digital sound processor
- Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit
- Media interface control unit
Design
Integrated into the COMAND controller unit are the following:
- DVD drive (with code (814) DVD changer)
- DVD changer (with code (814) DVD changer)
- Central computer
- Interfaces to MOST, telematics CAN and central CAN
- Navigation processor (with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD disk drive (with navigation)
- Hard disk
Diagnosis
The COMAND controller unit acts as a diagnostic interface for all control units on the MOST and telematics CAN. The faults that have occurred can be read out using the diagnostic CAN (CAN D) and the data link connector (X11/4).
