Due to legal requirements on the 24 GHz radar system (short range radar) the radar sensor system from 08/2007 is automatically switched off in certain protected areas around radio astronomy stations (RAS).

Recognition of whether the vehicle is in a protected area takes place using the GPS navigation system.

If the vehicle drives into a protected area, shutoff only takes if the regulating processes of all support systems which use the radar system are ended. For the support systems which is active at the time of the automatic shutoff, a message "< support system > automatically switched off, see operator's manual" is displayed in the multifunction display of the instrument cluster. This message also appears for a renewed activation attempt of the respective support system.

If the vehicle is switched off within a protected area, the current position and the current protected area are stored in the radar sensors control unit (SGR) (N62/1). This ensures that for a restart of the vehicle and not yet present GPS coordinates shutoff remains present.

If the driver tries to activate the radar sensor system manually again after an automatic shutoff the message "Radar sensor system automatically switched off" will be issued.

When the vehicle leaves the protected area, the radar sensor system is switched on again automatically. The message "DISTRONIC PLUS available again" is issued. The other support systems show by their indicator lamps that they ready to function.

Manual shutoff

The driver can perform manual shutoff of the radar sensor system via the multifunction steering wheel button group on the left or right (S110 or S111) in the menu "Adjustments", menu item "Radar sensor system" of the instrument cluster.

In order to be in a position to use the support systems again which the radar system needs the driver must activate the radar sensor system again via the menu in the instrument cluster.
