MODIFICATION NOTES

10.5.05 Carry out transmission adaptation inserted Step 10.1  
REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
DANGER Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. Align vehicle between columns of vehicle lift and position four support plates at vehicle lift support points specified by vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A
NOTES Information on preventing damage to electronic components due to electrostatic discharge   AH54.00-P-0001-01A
NOTES Notes on self-locking nuts and bolts   AH00.00-N-0001-01A
1 Switch off ignition    
2 Remove heat shield above the transmission connector (4e) TRANSMISSION 722.9 in MODEL 164 AR27.40-P-0700-01GZ 
3 Remove transmission oil pan (3) IMPORTANT Cleanliness is essential when working on the transmission. Otherwise, even the smallest foreign particle in the hydraulic components of the transmission can lead to malfunctions or a total failure of the transmission.
For cleaning, use lint-free cleaning cloth. Chamois leathers are the most suitable.

4 Remove oil filter (34) Installation:  Replace oil filter (34).  
5 Unplug 5-pin connector at transmission connector (4e) IMPORTANT Clean the transmission connector (4e) and connector on electric controller unit (VGS) (Y3/8).  
6 Unscrew bolts (4s) and remove electric controller unit (VGS) and fully integrated transmission control controller unit (Y3/8) NOTES If electric controller unit (VGS) (Y3/8) is jammed, carefully pry it off with sealing surfaces covered up. The sealing surfaces on the transmission housing (1) may otherwise be damaged.
IMPORTANT If electric controller unit (VGS) (Y3/8) is jammed, pry it off transmission housing (1) using a suitable tool.
IMPORTANTInstallation:  Replace bolts (4s) and B3 oil guide pipe (2).
Insert B3 oil guide pipe (2) into the transmission housing (1) before installing the electric controller unit (VGS) (Y3/8).
 
    Installation:  When installing electric controller unit (VGS) (Y3/8), insert selector valve (4w) into driver of detent plate (82). See ↓  
    Insert selector valve with driver into detent plate AR27.19-P-0200-01A 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA27.19-P-1001-01A 
7 Install in the reverse order    
8 Check oil level and correct if necessary   AR27.00-P-0270W 
9 Read out fault memory and erase IMPORTANT STAR DIAGNOSIS Stored faults which can result from cables being disconnected or from simulation during removal and installation or test work, have to be processed and erased in the fault memories after completing the work  
REFER TO SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS Connect STAR DIAGNOSIS and read out fault memory   AD00.00-P-2000-04A
10 Perform transmission adaptation After replacing or repairing transmission, perform transmission adaptation.  
DANGER Risk of accident  caused by vehicle starting off by itself when engine is running. Risk of injury caused by contusions and burns during starting procedure or when working near the engine as it is running Secure vehicle to prevent it from moving by itself.
Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes.
Do not touch hot or rotating parts.

11 Perform engine test run and check transmission for leaktightness and proper operation
