Front Axle

NOTE: During procedures number(s) and letter(s) in parentheses correspond to number(s) and letter(s) inside the illustration(s). The word arrow(s) in parentheses is used to point out specific components or movement.

For checking riding height specifications, see FRONT RIDING HEIGHT SPECIFICATIONS  tables.

  1. Prepare for chassis alignment check. See PREPARATION FOR RIDING HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT  . Ensure to rock vehicle to settle suspension before taking measurements.
  2. NOTE: For vehicles with code 612 xenon headlamps additional steps are required to install centering disk (086c) to measuring plate (086b).
  3. If vehicle is not equipped with code 612 xenon headlamps, go to step  3 . If equipped with xenon headlamps, install centering plate as follows:
    • Dismantle centering disk (086c) from the measuring plate (086b). See Fig 1 .
    • Reduce centering disk size (086c) on one side to dimension (A) (e.g. by filing). See Fig 2 .
    • Bolt centering disk (086c) to measuring plate (086b) in the position shown (arrow). DO NOT tighten. See Fig 3 .
    • Insert the measuring plate (086b) into the recess on the right of the lower wishbone. See Fig 4 .
    • Before tightening it, fit the measuring plate (086b) with the centering disk (086c) into the right lower wishbone and then tighten the bolts.
  4. Install measuring plate (086b) in the recess in the lower wishbone (control arm). See Figure .
  5. Vehicles with code 612 xenon headlamp, unscrew bolt (4a) until it no longer protrudes (arrow) at the lower wishbone (4). See Figure .
  6. The groove in the measuring plate (086b) should be at an angle of 90° to the direction of travel.
  7. Prepare for use of Electronic Inclinometer (CM 9606). See Figure under SPECIAL TOOLS. Clean measurement point at lower wishbones. Remove any metal shavings on the measuring plate.
  8. Check vehicle level (riding height) at front axle via the wishbone inclination.
  9. The sensor connecting cable (086b) of the measuring sensor (086a) must point towards the center of the vehicle, otherwise there will be measurement inaccuracies.
  10. Position the measuring sensor (086a), see Figure and record the measured value in each case:
    • Measuring point 1 (left front).
    • Measuring point 2 (right front).
  11. Check riding height specifications. See FRONT RIDING HEIGHT SPECIFICATIONS  table. If the front riding height is outside of specification, see FRONT AXLE ADJUSTMENT  under ADJUSTING RIDING HEIGHT.
